    SIP - SESSION INITIATION PROTOCOL & ITS BENEFITS (it's exciting - honestly!)


    Sipping - almost as good as Champagne     Session Initiation Protocol? It doesn't exactly sound exciting does it? So what is it? It's a modern lighter replacement for older H.323 telecoms protocols... sexy? No? OK it's an HTTP text based protocol; HTTP's hypertext transfer protocol, and if that sounds vaguely familiar, it's because that's what the Internet's based around.

    So what this means is that there's a protocol that works with internet type devices and over the web. This of course includes Voice over IP and the current internet enabled phones. It also means that its compatible with your computer network and the Internet. Because of this it can work with internet telephony, Internet multimedia conferences, internet type messaging devices and software, Voice over IP and... SIP enabled telephone systems.

    Still not excited?

    A scenario.... you receive a telephone call in the office, except you're out. Everything's set to forward to your voicemail except.... there's a vital call you need. So your phone system's been set to treat that caller as an exception: calls from that contact are to be forwarded straight to your mobile phone. SIP negotiates that, seamlessly, and if you're available on your mobile, will create a point to point call to you. However if you're in a meeting, train tunnel or are incommunicado for any reason it can... put the call back to voice mail.... tell the caller it's done that.... inform them that their message will be forwarded to you out of the office. It can then record their voice mail, forward it to your email as a message and text you to that effect. That's just one example.
