File storage - a growing problem?
Storage is a major issue in computing today. The total size of files that the average business has to store has been growing at over 70% per year for the last three years.
Part of this has been fueled by the increasing use of email and the increasing size of files sent over email. Most businesses want to accommodate this – getting the information you want and need quickly improves productivity, speeds up problem resolution and can give a marketing edge.
There’s also more software available than ever and more people making greater use of it. This means more and better information. So how do you manage?
A solution can be to create long-term file stores, where essential non-current information is kept. This can be placed behind an Intranet or SharePoint ‘front end’ with user access rights and password protection as required. A more sophisticated solution would be a complete document management system.
Network attached storage (NAS) devices have come down in price and can sit on small business networks as simple file stores. It’s a better idea to attach these to an existing file server as this provides some controls. NAS boxes can sometimes used with firewire as Direct Attached Storage (DAS) - or in cluster with email servers – providing the storage required – especially as an archive resource.
Larger organisations may benefit from more
sophisticated devices such as SANS (Storage Area Networks) that can save data from
several
sources, be replicated and provide speed, durability and resilience. As a Microsoft Gold Partner we can of course provide storage systems based around their DFS (Distributed File System) in integral component of Windows servers.
HP’s (Hewlett Packard) Storage Works solution is an excellent resource for medium sized businesses or smaller ones that have the foresight to see that they need an organised file storage system. Scaleable to 10’s of Terabytes storage, these devices can be populated with drives as required, chained together and linked to devices (e.g. file, email & database servers) by ultra-fast fibre ‘backplane’ connectors through an integrated fibre hub solution.
