RESILIENCE - AN ESSENTIAL NOT A LUXURY
Making your business resilient is key to long term survival. If you don’t there’s a 90%+ chance that you’ll go under if you experience a disaster. And the majority of disasters, 40%+, are caused by a loss of IT/Telecoms – whatever the source. Businesses, according to the BCI, can expect to experience some sort of disaster or major outage on average once every five years. Are you prepared?
How do you make your business resilient?
- Resilient design – RAID, backup devices, multiple components, UPS's, multiple network connections
- Clustered servers
- Replicated Servers
- Offsite / Online backup
- Offsite hosting
- High Availability solutions
- Workplace recovery seats
Our organisation offers all the above services and facilities. So what do you need? There is no generic answer, however you need to make a structured, realistic appraisal of risks. Non acceptable risks should be covered by appropriate resilience. “We’ll get by” and “We’ll work from home” are naive statements – typically made by people who haven’t properly evaluated and planned. Would you do business with them?
Resilient IT starts with good design – multiple RAID disks, uninterruptible power supplies and multiple processors are a start point. An appropriate backup device and regular service will help. But these won’t guard against failure. If your business relies on database systems, email, customer files and telephone systems, you need to consider on site facilities that make these even more robust. You also need to consider offsite facilities that will allow you to continue to function if you lose your site, your equipment fails or your communications links are severed. How long could you survive without these? And if it took 10 days to restore them, what would the financial impact be?
