COST SAVINGS

A full evaluation of the total cost of ownership of tape backup vs our offsite backup system, including licencing, hardware, software and staff time will demonstrate the value for money we offer. What's more our system offers reliability, recovery speed and ease of management unmatched by any tape system. In order to provide enhanced value the following  technologies have been developed and utilised.

COMPRESSION

You pay only for the compressed data stored on your vault at our secure data centre. In many instances documents and databases will compress to 50% of their original size during the backup process. As compression takes place before the data leaves your site, this also makes highly efficient use of bandwidth.

FILES - SINGLE INSTANCING

In a typical business scenario a single file can be passed around several people in an organization. This might include company marketing and policy documents, client proposals, marketing collateral and email attachments. Rather than backup several copies of an identical file the system keeps a 'single instance' and flags where it has been saved elsewhere - it then manages intelligently the retention of the original until it is archived or no longer required. This technology can make a substantial saving in your backup size and windows.

DELTA BLOCKING

Traditional file backups are unintelligent. If a person adds a small footnote or makes a minor alteration to a substantial document, the system recopies the whole file. DSM's system evaluates what has changed at files storage block level - often the changes in a file of 10s of MB may be confined to a few KB of disk space. In these scenarios only the changes and the file header are backed up. Therefore what may have required e.g. 27MB of backup could be achieved in 30KB.

OTHER SAVINGS

If you're managing multiple tape sets and/or backing up multiple servers, you will effect substantial time savings in using the system - you can securely and effectively manage the backup of a whole network of servers (and desktops if required) from 1 GUI.And as the system can be programmed to actively report, that's all that's usually required. If you need to recover individual files you'll probably save hours, and the time savings - critical time usually - in a disaster recovery scenario can be even greater.
